Mudra
 
[Sanskrit »Siegel«, »Zeichen«] die, -/-s, Buddhismus, Hinduismus, Jainismus: eine durch bestimmte Stellung der Finger beziehungsweise Hände gekennzeichnete Geste von symbolischer Bedeutung, der im tantrisch beeinflussten Ritual mit Rezitation von Mantras magische Kraft zugeschrieben wird. In der indischen Ikonographie dient sie zur Charakterisierung einer Götterfigur (v. a. um eine Aktivität oder einen Aspekt zu signalisieren, z. B. Gajahasta); auch im indischen Tanz spielen die Mudras eine Rolle. Viel dargestellte Mudras sind die Anjalimudras (Grußgeste) sowie die Gesten der meditierenden Buddhafigur, besonders die Dhyanamudra. (»Meditation«) und die Dharmacakramudra (Inbewegungsetzung des »Rades der Lehre«).
